Chinnor Boys FC

I was very sad to hear about Mr Walford, my manager of a very successful Chinnor Boys football team during the 1970s.

Around 50 years later I still love to play football each week and my ongoing enthusiasm and commitment to the sport is, in part, testament to John Walford's inspiring influence from all those years ago.

Growing up around Chinnor during 1970s football was one of the few regular organised activities on offer. As quite a shy young boy, football gave me a valuable outlet to build up confidence and cement friendships, some of which have lasted until now. I have been exchanging old stories and photos this week with fellow team member Pete Merrow-Smith.

I played under John's leadership for 5 seasons from under 12 to under 16 and we were unbeaten in 3 of those dominating the Tring, Risboro and Aylesbury leagues. We also embarked on an international tour to Holland - what an adventure for us!

I lost contact with John after leaving Chinnor Boys until out of the blue we managed to exchange some emails and it was great to hear from him again after all the years. It brought all the memories flooding back.

Football was such a big part of my growing up. With weekly training and matches during the season - John provided a great structure of routine and discipline whatever the weather or conditions.

He had some great touches in his management. Every player received a selection card ahead each game with position and details. It always created a buzz of anticipation. If you were lucky enough to receive a man of the match award you would feel 10 foot tall for the following week.

I have thought about him alot since hearing the sad news and remembering his many special qualities. He was calm and humble but fiercely competitive and determined. He was caring, enthusiastic and highly committed to the club and his players. He was a gentleman but set high standards for his team.

It says much of a person that they are held in such high regards after so many years.

It is a great regret that I won't have the opportunity to attend his funeral to pay my respects but I will raise a toast during the day to a great man.

Cheers Mr Walford!
